Summary
MKUltra Subproject 73 was a research program funded by the CIA to study narcotic hypnosis. The surviving paperwork shows the project was approved in 1957 with $6,864.00 in obligated funds charged to Allotment 7-2502-10-001. The research was conducted through a university (redacted) and managed by TSS/CD. The program studied whether drug-induced hypnosis could be increased using various drugs including alcohol, cocaine, mescaline, scopolamine, and LSD. The scope included reviewing foreign and American literature on hypnosis, compiling literature surveys on specific hypnosis problems, consolidating information to answer questions about hypnosis, acting as an advisor on hypnosis research, evaluating research projects, and reporting on hypnosis meetings. A principal investigator with TOP SECRET clearance was aware of the true purposes and agreed to comply with the memorandum of agreement. The project involved establishing human testing procedures and schedules.
