1953 to 1955 · 15 documents · 36 pages
Summary
Note on labeling: these images are filed under Subproject 9 in the batch, but the surviving documents are headed Subproject 8 and one memo is titled an addendum to Subprojects 8 and 10. The summary describes what the paperwork actually shows.
The file covers a research program run by a redacted investigator (an M.D.) at a redacted hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. A 28 July 1955 addendum memo covers the period 9 June 1953 through 15 September 1955 and sets out the duties of the contractor and sponsor. It says the hospital was asked to give a summary accounting of monies received from the Fund and to return any unexpended grant funds. Title to permanent equipment bought with grant money was to stay with the hospital in place of higher overhead rates. Sidney Gottlieb signed as Chief of the TSS Chemical Division.
Most of the file is money records. A ledger card shows about $40,000.00 obligated against this subproject. Invoice No. 2, dated 5 February 1954, asks for two checks totaling $26,860.00, broken out as a $26,333.33 grant payment and a 2% service charge of $526.67. Certificates and memorandum receipts confirm these were paid by cashier's checks M138328 and M138329, received in February 1954. Earlier certificates from August 31, 1953 record receipt of cashier's checks M133785 for $13,166.67 and M133786 for $263.33.
One 25 September 1953 page is a chemical order for 100 grams of trichloro-tert-butyl alcohol, with a note that the order must state the chemical will not be used for drug purposes or sold for such use.
