Summary

On April 28, 1961, an Air Force pilot saw an object about 2 miles west of Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, around 10:40 p.m. (GMT) at night. The pilot, a lieutenant colonel and assistant director of wing operations, was rated very reliable and was flying an F-100F at 24,000 feet, heading southwest at 300 knots.

The object was bullet shaped and bluish white, with a fiery tail about the same length as the object itself. It followed a descending arc in a northerly direction and appeared to burn out around 24,000 feet. The sighting lasted a few seconds. The sky was clear.

The Air Force found that the description given by the witness fit a bolide. A check showed no satellite reentries at that time.
