Summary

On February 27, 1961, around 9:35 p.m. local time, a civilian in Portland, Oregon, reported a round, white object about the size of a grapefruit. It was seen for about 10 to 12 minutes at night.

The object appeared about 45 degrees above the horizon, near an azimuth of 225 degrees. It would climb high and grow dim, then descend and grow bright. The witness said it finally disappeared into what was described as outer space. Its position at disappearance was not known.

The report was handled under the Moon Dust program and reached an Air Defense Sector senior director. The Air Force card notes that how the object's disappearance into outer space was determined is unknown. It states the information is too limited to reach a valid conclusion.
