Summary

On a clear January day in 1949, two separate sightings near Tillamook, Oregon raised questions that would eventually land on the desks of U.S. Air Force investigators. On January 23, a man driving south on Highway 101 spotted what he described as a shiny, silvery object hovering near Pleasant Valley. The next day, an elderly man behind his home reported seeing a saucer-shaped disc the size of the full moon moving northeast overhead at between 1,400 and 2,000 feet altitude.

The first witness, a machinist, said the object remained stationary in his view for about two and a half to three minutes as he drove. He estimated it was roughly one-half to three-quarters of a mile away and about 500 feet high. The object resembled polished silver reflecting sunlight, and he described it as being about the size of his open hand held at arm's length. He heard no sound, saw no trail, and noted the object did not move during his observation. Weather conditions were clear and pleasant.

The second witness, a man in his sixties who was partially deaf and wore thick spectacles, observed the object moving northeast at what he claimed was 20 to 35 miles per hour. He said it traveled approximately 500 feet in distance over about one minute before fading from sight. He noted the object seemed to float without motion and cast no sound or odor. Notably, the investigator's report expressed doubt about this second account, suggesting the elderly witness may have fabricated details to support his son-in-law's earlier report after local newspaper coverage drew ridicule.

An investigator noted that a silver airplane from a local school of aeronautics had departed the area on a similar timeline and route. The plane, he observed, "drawing away" would not appear to move just as the witnesses described, and the automobile engines and noise would have masked any aircraft sound. The Air Force ultimately classified this case as unidentified. The complete case file, comprising 21 pages as held by the National Archives, is reproduced below.
