Project Blue Book Case File
Rogue River, OregonMay 1949
Summary
On May 24, 1949, at about 1700 (5:00 p.m.), a civilian woman and four other people saw an object while fishing on the Rogue River near Gold Beach, Oregon. She was interviewed by an Air Force Office of Special Investigations agent. The Air Force conclusion was aircraft. The case was handled under Project Sign, an early Air Force study of these reports.
The witness described the object as round, silver in color, and about the size of a C-47 aircraft (a common transport plane). It made no noise, left no exhaust trail, and made no maneuvers. When first pointed out to her, it appeared to be three or four miles away. It came from the east, then turned toward the southwest. She said it seemed to travel about as fast as a C-47.
The witness said she was not familiar with aircraft and could not estimate the speed or altitude well. A weather station reported the coast was open and clear that day. An Air Force officer later advised that the area was not under radar coverage. The card states that no data was presented to show the object could not have been an aircraft.
