Summary

On November 20, 1961, a military observer aboard a T-33 jet about 60 miles west of Newport, Oregon, reported an object at about 6:35 p.m. (0235 Zulu). One object was seen, round and yellow, about the size of a softball. It looked like a ram jet engine spurting a bluish flame, with a tail about one and a half to two feet long. No sound was heard. The object was at about 20 degrees above the horizon. It made a straight, steep dive of about 40 degrees into the clouds. The sighting lasted about 6 seconds. The sky was clear at the aircraft's altitude with a bright moon. The Air Force listed the case as having the marks of a meteor.
