Project Blue Book Case File
[ILLEGIBLE], June [ILLEGIBLE]Date unknown
Summary
On June 27, 1952, a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and his wife witnessed a brilliant red, pulsating light in the sky south of Topeka, Kansas. The couple stood on a corner on the city's south side and watched the object hover approximately 10 miles away at an angle of 15 degrees above the horizon. The light shifted shape from circular to oval as it pulsed at a steady rate. Over five minutes, timed by the observer's watch, the object made no sound, left no trail, and did not move from its position. It vanished instantly without fading or departing.
The air intelligence report noted that weather conditions at the time were clear with 15 miles of visibility. A separate entry in the file references an observation made by a civilian in Orlando, Florida, on the same date and time, describing a disc-shaped object moving at an estimated 500 to 600 miles per hour, but this sighting appears to be a different incident from the Topeka observation.
The Air Force investigation found no meteorological or other conditions that might explain the sighting. No physical evidence was recovered, and no interception or identification action was taken. The file indicates the observer held military credentials and was deemed reliable, but the case file itself contains no final determination of what the object was. The full case file, consisting of 19 pages, is reproduced below as held by the National Archives.
