Summary
On October 21, 1958, at 5:55 p.m. local time, two military pilots saw a glowing object in the sky near Karlsruhe, Germany. The main observer was a flight commander flying an F-100 aircraft at 33,000 feet. A second pilot from the same unit also saw it.
The object was round and about the size of a pea, with a light yellowish-green color. It appeared as a ball of fire with a tail four to five times its diameter. It was about 10 degrees above the horizon and fell straight down. It was in view for one to two seconds before going down instantly.
The weather was clear with a broken cloud layer. The reporting officer believed the sighting was reliable. The second pilot said the object first appeared as a small light that grew larger, then dropped below the horizon. The Air Force concluded the object was astronomical, identifying it as a fireball or meteor.
