Summary

On the evening of September 8, 1958, a woman in Toledo, Ohio named Pamela A. Rowe noticed a bright glowing object in the sky around 6:30 p.m. The object remained stationary for about two minutes, then began moving in an unusual circular motion while continuing to glow brightly. Suddenly it shot straight upward, turned black, and left a small white trail behind. It then made a sharp right angle turn and vanished from sight.

Rowe took photographs of the object just before it disappeared. In the images, the object appears as a small black spot followed by a white vapor trail. She circled the object on the negatives with a grease pencil and submitted both the prints and negatives to the U.S. Air Force for analysis.

Air Force photo analysts found the images so poor in quality that they could not make a definite identification. An initial assessment suggested the object might be an F-100 series aircraft in a climbing attitude (steep upward angle). However, multiple review teams noted that the negatives were of such low quality that accurate evaluation was impossible. The final Air Force conclusion, stated in a November 1958 letter returning the negatives to Rowe, was that "from the trail left by the object, it is felt the object was probably an aircraft in flight," though analysts could not identify its specific type or series.

The case file suggests this sighting occurred during a period when military jet aircraft were commonly visible in Ohio airspace, and the object's behavior, including its sharp turns and white trail, are consistent with a jet in flight. However, the poor photographic quality meant the Air Force could never confirm its initial hypothesis or rule out other explanations. The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives, containing 12 pages of official records.
