Summary
On September 18, 1958, an Air Force pilot and crew flying near Aviano Air Base, Italy, reported an unidentified flying object at 1122Z, with a second sighting at 1130Z, about eight minutes apart. Flying F-100 aircraft at 37,000 feet, the witnesses described one round object the size of a pea, very bright at the center like a light bulb, against a clear blue sky. It appeared above their cruise altitude and seemed stationary, holding the same position on both sightings. It did not disappear and was still visible after about 8 minutes when the aircraft broke contact to return to base.
The pilots, all rated as having excellent reliability, used no optical aids. Weather checks indicated a balloon may have been released from a weather office in Milan, Italy. The Air Force conclusion on the Project 10073 record card was balloon, noting the description was characteristic of a balloon and that checks revealed one had been released. Project 10073 was the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
