Summary

On June 7, 1958, a resident of Yellow Springs, Ohio, reported seeing a white disc-shaped object with a slight tinge of yellow or red while outdoors in open countryside. The sighting lasted about twelve minutes. The witness said the object flickered as it moved in a circular path across the sky.

The witness was not moving during the observation and first noticed the object while going about routine activities. When asked to describe what the object might have been, the witness offered competing explanations. Initially, they thought it might be a satellite based on its behavior and appearance. Later, they wondered if it was an aircraft, though they noted it made no sound and displayed a blinking light that oscillated in an unusual way. The witness thought the object's motion resembled that of an aircraft at high altitude, but they remained uncertain.

The Air Force investigator who reviewed the case noted that the object's "description and maneuvers are typical of an aircraft." The file also notes that Springfield airport is located just north of the observer's position in Yellow Springs. The Air Force concluded the sighting was probably an aircraft, though the case file does not explain how the flickering and oscillating light behavior rule out a satellite or other explanation. This 8-page case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives.
