Summary
On February 7, 1955, a man sitting at a picnic table near Knights Landing, California reported seeing an unusual aircraft in the sky. He was watching a jet leaving a heavy vapor trail when he noticed a second and third jet flying parallel to it. Then, about 10 miles away, he spotted an unidentified aircraft at an altitude of roughly 8,000 to 14,000 feet. He said it was flying in a steep bank at an extremely fast speed, moving faster than the jets overhead. The object appeared to have a swept-back wing configuration. A short time later, he saw another object about 12 seconds away that resembled a saucer. This object was reflective, shiny like aluminum, and moving in the same direction as the jets above. It then dove at approximately a 45-degree angle before the witness lost sight of it briefly. When the object reappeared, it was at 2,500 to 3,000 feet altitude and resembled a huge wing in a complete slip as it descended. The object slowed down, hovered, and moved away to the south. As it moved, it performed a vertical bank, rolled to horizontal, and then climbed vertically out of sight. The witness said the total observation time was four or five minutes, with close-range viewing lasting seven or eight seconds. He stated the object had no visible markings, no distinguishable power source, but the area around the trailing edge seemed hazy with several slotted areas visible.
Air Force investigators received the report on March 23, 1955. The witness provided his background including military service as a former Army staff sergeant and pilot experience of approximately 245 flight hours. The case was referred to the Air Technical Intelligence Center, which evaluated it as "probably an experimental aircraft," possibly an F-100 or F-102 fighter. In written correspondence dated April 19, 1960, the Air Force confirmed that the sighting had been reviewed and the original evaluation of experimental aircraft remained unchanged. The case file spans 86 pages as held by the National Archives.
