Summary
On August 3, 1955, near 2:30 p.m. local time, a civilian ground observer in Charlotte, North Carolina reported one object. The witness was a housewife. The Air Force recorded the report under Project 10073, its official record for unidentified flying object reports.
The object was a very bright light, brighter than stars or normal aircraft. It looked about the size of a half dollar held at arm's length and was white and yellow. It moved from directly overhead to the eastern horizon in a straight line. The sighting lasted about two or three seconds. Weather was clear.
The Air Force noted the object crossed a major part of the sky in just a few seconds. Officials concluded the sighting was possibly astronomical, a meteorite or meteor. No field investigation was authorized because of the delay in reporting.
