Summary

On the night of February 25, 1958, a civilian aeronautical engineer working at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia, witnessed two separate sightings of unusual lights in quick succession. The observer, a World War II Army veteran with a security clearance, reported the encounters to base officials the following morning.

In the first sighting at approximately 11:30 p.m., the witness saw a V-formation of seven lights moving from south to north at an estimated 600 knots (roughly 690 miles per hour), about twice the normal speed of jet aircraft in the area. The lights appeared white with a yellow tinge and were visible for only three to five seconds before disappearing behind a house. The observer noted he heard no sound, despite listening specifically for the noise that would accompany such fast-moving objects. He estimated the formation was flying at about 3,000 feet altitude.

Two and a half hours later, around 2 a.m. on February 26, the same observer spotted a nearly identical formation of lights while walking on Newport News Avenue, this time nearly directly overhead. In this second sighting, he had a clearer view and reported that the individual lights appeared to have a diffused glow rather than being sharp points, and that they seemed to oscillate or move rapidly within their V-formation while maintaining a general northwesterly heading. Again, the lights disappeared within three to five seconds, vanishing as though switched off rather than disappearing behind landscape features.

Air Force investigators reviewed the sightings against weather data, aircraft movement records, and radar logs from the time. No military or civilian aircraft were recorded in the area that would match the observer's description. Wind and weather conditions showed nothing unusual that might account for balloons or other natural phenomena. The Air Force file indicates the case remained unexplained.
