Summary

On February 13, 1953, at 1823 (6:23 p.m.) Eastern time, a soldier reported a fast moving object near Petersburg, Virginia. The witness was Private Rudolph Yaros, stationed at Camp Pickett, Virginia. He was driving toward his home in Maryland and saw the object from the moving car.

The object was round with a long tail, like a comet. It was made up of reddish, green, and blue colors. It moved at very high speed toward the northwest. The man could not give an accurate speed estimate. The object first looked like a ball with a tail, then broke into three parts and disappeared.

The sighting lasted two or three seconds. The sky was clear with unrestricted visibility. Checks with nearby air bases and centers found no other reports. The Air Force concluded the cause was possibly astronomical, a meteor.
