Insufficient Data

Summary

At approximately 8 p.m. on May 12, 1949, multiple people across the Roanoke, Virginia area reported seeing a mysterious object moving through the sky. The object appeared as a long, narrow, glowing red-yellow streak. Witnesses described it traveling from west to east, rising from the horizon to overhead and then disappearing to the east. The sighting lasted roughly five to ten minutes for most observers.

Several features of the object struck the witnesses as unusual. Those who saw it most clearly reported a bright, ball-like point at the front, followed by a long, narrow, dimly glowing tail. As it climbed higher, some observers said they saw sparks or a shower of small lights trailing from the object, resembling Fourth of July fireworks. The glow was compared to light passing through fog or smoke. One witness with Air Force pilot experience estimated the object's size at around 12,000 to 13,000 feet altitude and thought it was eight to ten miles away. Several observers reported hearing a deep, distant roar as the object passed overhead, though one said the sound seemed unrelated to the object itself. No one heard any engines clearly or confidently linked the sound to what they were seeing.

The Air Force investigation took place over the following months. Officers interviewed the main witnesses, consulted official weather data, and reviewed flight schedules for the Roanoke area. Weather reports showed scattered clouds at various altitudes, visibility of twenty to twenty-five miles, and light winds. The Roanoke control tower confirmed that two Naval aircraft were flying in the area, scheduled airline flights were passing through, and the Weather Bureau had released a balloon that afternoon for wind measurements. No unusual weather patterns or atmospheric conditions were noted. The object had no known contact with the ground, no photographs were obtained, and investigators found no additional witnesses or corroborating evidence beyond the original reports. The file concludes that the object's characteristics, size, height, and speed could not be accurately determined from the available information.
