Summary

On the night of July 31, 1949, a woman in Portsmouth, Virginia, reported seeing six flying discs over the area near the U.S. Naval Hospital. She watched them between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. The objects appeared and vanished within about five to six minutes. Two showed up close together, and the rest came one to one and a half minutes apart.

The witness said each object first looked like a small white cloud. It then opened up into the shape of a tulip, changed into the shape of a saucer, and soon disappeared. She described the color as dull white, not bright. She could not estimate the height or speed. The report says two other women at the same apartment house also saw the objects. The information was passed to Navy and Air Force intelligence. On the Air Force record for unidentified flying object reports (Project 10073), the listed conclusion was cloud.
