Summary

On May 21, 1961, near Okinawa, an aircraft crew observed an object in the night sky. The crew sighted what appeared to be a satellite at 9:22 p.m. The object was traveling northwest to southeast at 43 degrees elevation from the aircraft. The object was visible for 12 minutes and had a brightness comparable to a first magnitude star. The observation was made in good weather conditions at 7,800 feet altitude. The brief report indicates the sighting was of an object in gross sight traveling and described as a satellite, with no conflicting information noted.
