Summary
On August 12, 1955, a civilian woman saw an object near her home about 12 miles southeast of Pinecastle Air Force Base in Florida. She lived southeast of Orlando along Highway 15. The report came in at 1216Z (the Air Force time stamp).
The witness described the object as looking like a wheelbarrow flying upside down. It was a black globe or balloon with a metal frame on top. She said it was about the same size as a B-47 jet. It made a sound like a reciprocating (propeller) aircraft and left no exhaust.
The object flew straight and level, heading due west, and stayed in sight about one minute before flying out of view. The weather had scattered showers, with west wind at 25 knots and a thunderstorm to the southwest.
The Air Force concluded the sighting was probably a B-47 aircraft. Officers believed the witness saw a B-47 making an approach to Pinecastle with its rear landing gear down. Heavy clouds in the area could have caused sun reflections that made a halo around the plane.
