Project Blue Book Case File
Omaha, NebraskaSeptember 1952
Summary
On September 25, 1952, two airmen stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska observed two strange objects in the sky near Omaha. At 1015 CST (10:15 a.m.), A/1C James O. Howell noticed a small silvery object high overhead while he was leaving a building. The object appeared stationary at first, then moved eastward. A second similar object joined it, and both moved together toward the east before disappearing. Minutes later, one object reappeared and moved westward across the sky.
Howell called over S/Sgt Robert S. Lewis, and both men watched the objects for approximately five minutes. The airmen described the objects as round and silver in color, reflecting light. Each object appeared to be about the size of a quarter when viewed from the ground, though the men could not estimate their exact altitude beyond saying it was "very high." The objects moved erratically, sometimes remaining stationary and sometimes flying east to west or west to east.
The weather that day was clear with 13 miles of visibility, thin cirrus clouds above 25,000 feet, and calm surface winds. Military air traffic in the area included one B-47 at high altitude leaving vapor trails and one T-11 at approximately 5,000 feet. The Air Force investigation found no physical evidence and noted that interception or identification efforts were negative.
The headquarters investigation team was unable to evaluate the report. All details are preserved in the declassified case file, which spans 11 pages held by the National Archives.
