Summary

On August 4, 1953, about 2340 (11:40 p.m.), a civilian saw an object over West Point, Nebraska. The witness was a former rated pilot who had flown in World War II.

The witness had just shut off a sprinkler when a moving light caught his eye. It moved from north-northwest to south-southeast. It was slightly brighter than the brightest stars. It stayed clearly visible until it dropped behind a neighbor's house to the south. As it moved away the light dimmed, except for about 30 seconds when it grew bright again while due south of him.

No sound was ever heard, and the light was white. The witness thought it was far away and moving fast. The sky was clear with bright stars. He believed others may have seen it and that radar might have picked it up. The Air Force listed the case as astronomical, evaluating it as a fireball or meteor.
