Omaha, NebraskaJanuary 1954
Summary
On January 2, 1954, at about 12:55 a.m. GMT near Omaha, Nebraska, civilian and military observers reported one object. The witnesses, including two students and an Air Force major, were driving toward Omaha. They saw the object through the windshield of their car. It was in sight for about 5 to 10 seconds.
The object was oval, about half the size and shape of a football, and fluorescent light green. It trailed a flame that went from bright red orange near the object to yellow at the end, about one and a half times the size of the object. It was about 28 to 30 degrees above the horizon, moving in a very flat, slightly descending path from southeast to northwest in straight flight. It disappeared either at the end of the light or over the horizon.
The weather was clear with excellent visibility and starlight. The Air Force record lists the conclusion as astronomical, meteor. An air operations officer said the description fit an exceptionally bright meteor. Local astronomers had no record for that date, and nearby radar stations had no unidentified return.
