MKUltra Subproject 84
1958 to 1967 · 40 documents · 59 pages
Summary
MKUltra Subproject 84 funded research into hypnosis and motivation from 1960. A redacted researcher received $30,000 in supplemental funds starting in August 1960. The surviving paperwork shows the project studied how hypnosis might relate to inducing changes in a person's motivational state. The contractor was listed as 'Dr.' with a redacted name, noted as a grantee. By August 1961, the grantee had received $10,000 and by September through December 1961 received $20,000 more, totaling $30,000. A 1961 certification noted an unexpended balance of $20,507.53 and that no institution had been named for accountability reasons, making further accounting impossible. A 1967 memo requested write-off of the unexpended portion ($20,507.53) based on unspecified security and cover reasons.
