Summary

MKUltra Subproject 53 was a covert CIA project that ran from at least 1953 to 1956. The surviving paperwork shows financial and administrative records from 1956, the final year of the subproject. The project cost $2,030.00 total and was charged to Allotment 6-2502-10-001. According to a March 21, 1956 memorandum, the project involved funding an expedition to study hallucinogenic species of mushrooms of interest to the Technical Security Service. The principal investigator was unwilling or unable to provide detailed financial controls or documentation beyond summary accounting. The project took place in June and July of 1956 and was accompanied by a cleared TSS contractor. Expenses from July 4 to August 8, 1956 totaling $3,097.74 covered photo supplies, camera and equipment, camera repair services, tape recorders, binoculars, travel accident policies, luggage charges, and miscellaneous costs. The subproject was closed after August 1956.
