Project Blue Book Case File
W of Boreland, MichiganJuly 1958
Summary
On July 8, 1958, west of Boreland, Michigan, a civilian witness observed a red, bright white object with a smoke track behind it for one second. The object moved east. The Air Force received the report from Grand Rapids Ground Control Center. Senior Director Lieutenant John Meyer noted that a military aircraft making a sharp turn on bank could flash a bright light off its body shortly after sunset if the sun was still visible at altitude, even when almost dark on the ground. The Air Force concluded the sighting was probably a meteor. However, the only other possibility mentioned was a weather balloon.
