Summary

On February 4, 1953, near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a civilian reported sighting an unidentified flying object about 14 miles west of Lancaster. The object was described as approximately the size of three stars and orange in color. It was observed about 37 degrees above the horizon, hovered for several minutes, then flew out of sight to the west. Weather conditions at Lancaster were clear with 15 miles visibility. The Air Force concluded there was insufficient data for evaluation, noting that both Mars and Venus were in the west but that the color was more closely associated with Mars, however insufficient data remained.
