Summary

On April 1, 1954, civilians aboard the motor vessel El Cafetero reported observing a novel kind of balloon in the air at position 40 degrees 39 minutes North, 44 degrees 10 minutes West in the Atlantic Ocean. The object was very large and moved against the wind in a southeasterly direction at very high speed. When last seen, the balloon steered toward clouds and disappeared. White smoke was observed underneath the balloon. The sighting was witnessed by several people aboard the ship. The Air Force concluded the report represented a balloon.
