Summary

On the evening of January 16, 1954, two teenage boys in Picayune, Mississippi spotted something unusual in the sky. The young men, both students at the local high school, were standing near a television antenna when they noticed a shiny, silver object moving across the sky. The object was cylinder-shaped with rounded ends and appeared roughly the size of an orange held at arm's length. It traveled from the southwest to the northeast in a straight line, taking about 75 seconds to pass beyond their field of vision.

The boys noted several unusual features about what they saw. The object made no sound and had no visible tail, exhaust, or windows. Its surface appeared smooth and featureless. They watched it move at a steady altitude of about 40 degrees above the horizon. The object appeared to be heading west against the prevailing winds, which an investigator noted would rule out the possibility that it was a balloon.

The Air Force investigated the sighting shortly after it was reported. The investigating officer from Keesler Air Force Base interviewed the two witnesses and found them to be reliable and conscientious in their observations. Both boys said they had carefully noted the details because they understood the importance of properly reporting such sightings. The officer checked weather records and found wind patterns that seemed consistent with the boys' description of the object's direction. He also confirmed that the area was remote, off established flight paths, with no nearby weather stations or balloon-release facilities.

In his final assessment, the investigating officer stated he was unable to establish a logical explanation for the sighting. He wrote that the object's apparent size and distance indicated it was "probably not a conventional aircraft." The Air Force ultimately classified this case as unidentified.
