Project Blue Book Case File
Gulfport, MississippiDecember 1954
Summary
On December 7, 1954, an Air Force navigator in Gulfport, Mississippi witnessed a round, flat grey object in the sky. The object appeared translucent and rotated rapidly on its vertical axis. At first it moved up and down, then suddenly sped away at an estimated speed of 500 to 650 miles per hour.
An Air Force officer discussed the sighting with a local meteorologist. Based on that conversation, the meteorologist suggested the object could possibly have been a small wind vortex carrying dust and debris. However, the Air Force ultimately marked the case as unidentified, meaning the investigators could not confirm that explanation or settle on any other definitive cause.
