Summary

On January 15, 1961, at night, a man and four passengers in a car entering Holt, Minnesota reported a round, blue-white object the size of a basketball. The whole countryside seemed to light up, making the car's headlights look dim. No sound was heard.

The light first appeared directly over the auto. It moved away from the observers on an azimuth of about 210 degrees in a straight line. It appeared to break up into several small chunks of blue-white light, then disappeared as if a switch had been thrown. The sighting lasted about 2 seconds. The main witness was a fixed station air base operator and pilot with 28 years of experience, considered very reliable.

The Air Force conclusion was probably astronomical (meteor). The comment notes several similar reports that month and that the earth was passing through several meteor showers.
