Summary

On September 5, 1958, a 16-year-old student near Thermopolis, Wyoming, reported an unidentified flying object at about 0432Z (night). The witness described one star-shaped object the size of a pinhead, red and green in color, moving in a steady course. It was first seen over the horizon, then moved north and later northwest, and was still in sight at the time of the report. It was seen with the naked eye. The object had no trail and made no sound.

Skies were clear. An F-89J interceptor was sent up and searched the area for about 42 minutes from 1,500 to 30,000 feet but made no visual or radar contact. The director noted that because the pilot could not find anything and the object was reported as star-shaped, it may have been a star or other astronomical feature. The Air Force conclusion on the Project 10073 record card was probably astronomical, noting the star Vega was near the reported position. Project 10073 was the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
