Project Blue Book Case File
Woomera, Australia, November 1953November 1953
Summary
On the night of November 22 to 23, 1953, near Woomera, Australia, several civilians reported objects in the sky. The witnesses were local residents driving on roads near Woomera and Port Augusta. They were interviewed by a security officer and were regarded as reliable people.
One witness described a green object shaped like an inverted saucer, flying north at high speed with bluish exhaust from the rear and sides. It seemed to vanish for moments as if flying above cloud. Another witness saw a bluish green circular object flying north at high speed. A third reported two orange flares that turned pale blue and dropped straight down. A fourth saw a bright object moving north at high speed.
The Air Force record lists the conclusion as astronomical, meteors. The local report noted the objects were above 5,000 feet. It suggested a bright star seen through light cloud, or a meteor, could explain the sightings, and recommended a check with a government astronomer.
