Project Blue Book Case File
EAU Callie. Florida, January 1953January 1953
Summary
On the evening of January 4, 1953, a civilian employee at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida watched an unusual object streak across the sky near Eau Gallie. The witness, described as a reliable and experienced observer, saw the craft for only two to three seconds as it flew from northwest to southwest at an altitude between 500 and 700 feet.
The object resembled a flying wing, similar in overall shape to a B-29 bomber but larger than a B-36. The witness judged it to be eight to eleven feet thick at its widest point, tapering toward the wing tips. The color was non-metallic gray. Underneath the wing, he saw between four and ten blue lights that glowed softly without flickering. There was no sound, no vapor trail, and no metallic sheen. The craft entered at about twenty degrees to the right from directly overhead and appeared to bank before disappearing from view as trees blocked the line of sight.
The sighting occurred at 1845 hours (6:45 p.m.) on a clear, cold evening with little or no wind. The witness was standing on his own property on US Route 1, about four miles north of Eau Gallie. In a follow-up interview, the observer provided detailed descriptions of the object's maneuvers and shape, noting that he had significant experience observing aircraft movements near the base and had traveled extensively. He was confident in his account and certified it to be accurate to the best of his knowledge.
The Air Force evaluated the case as unknown. The full case file, comprising 10 pages as held by the National Archives, is reproduced below.
