Summary
On February 2, 1952, an air crew aboard a MATS (Military Air Transport Service) transport plane traveling from Travis Air Force Base, California to Hickam Air Base, Hawaii observed what appeared to be a red rocket burst at an estimated distance of 500 yards off the port wing. The burst occurred at 5,000 feet altitude while the aircraft itself was flying at 2,000 feet. The position of the aircraft at the time was 70°73' North, 110°02' West. The air crew provided more detailed information to Naval Intelligence officers upon landing, and was reported to be tentatively of the opinion that the incident may have been of celestial origin.
