Summary

On July 16, 1957, at 11:57 a.m. local time, a civilian in Cheyenne, Wyoming reported seeing unusual vapor trails. The observation lasted about five minutes. The sky had scattered to broken clouds in two layers.

The witness saw a vapor trail arc form near the zenith. The trail was very faint and narrow. It made a full 180 degree turn and formed in about twelve seconds, with no aircraft or object visible. Cross shaped patterns developed at right angles to the arc as the trail formed. Within about half a minute, a second trail developed moving from west to east in a straight line.

The Air Force record (Project 10073, its official file for unidentified flying object reports) found nothing unusual. The comment notes such trails are often seen with a plane that is not visible because of high altitude.
