Project Blue Book Case File
Yellowstone National Park, WyomingJuly 1949
Summary
On July 8, 1949, between about 6:30 and 7:00 a.m., a civilian man and his wife saw objects while fishing on Shoshone Lake in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. The man's written account is in the file. The Air Force conclusion was "other (birds)." The report became part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
The man said his attention was drawn by a sound like the whir of duck wings. Looking up about 800 to 1,000 feet, he saw eight objects that appeared round and about 20 feet across. He said they looked like bright metal and were not in formation. He compared them to a flock of blackbirds, some above and some below each other. There was no smoke, no exhaust, and no motor sound.
He said the objects went up and down and moved very fast. One turned completely over while passing among the others without touching them. The morning was clear and sunny. The Air Force analysis noted that sunlight reflecting off the wet bodies of birds can make them look like a very large object at a much greater distance, especially at dusk and dawn.
