Project Blue Book Case File
EAST MOLINE, ILL, October 1952October 1952
Summary
On October 11, 1952, at 10:03 a.m. Central time, a civilian woman stopped at a traffic light at 7th Street and 17th Avenue in East Moline, Illinois, reported one object. She described it as shaped like a hat box with an inverted saucer on top, meaning a squat flat bottom and a rounded top, with what appeared to be portholes around the side.
The woman said the object was clearly visible with sharp outlines. Weather at the time was clear with 15 miles visibility. The report was forwarded through the Civil Aeronautics Administration and the military flight service.
The Air Force replied that under Project Blue Book policy, the reporting agency uses its own judgment about whether a sighting is important enough to forward, and stated this sighting fell into the unimportant category. The record card calls it a poor report from an inexperienced observer and lists the conclusion as insufficient data. (Note: the file also includes an unrelated October 12, 1952 report from off Atlantic City of a brilliant object seen from an F-94 aircraft, which is cataloged separately.)
