Project Blue Book Case File
Korea, May 1952May 1952
Summary
On May 31, 1952, near Chorwon in North Korea, the crew of an F-94 jet reported seeing and chasing an unidentified flying object during the Korean War. The object gave off a brilliant white light and was estimated to be round. The crew said it had greater speed and climbing ability than their F-94 and could turn as well as the jet.
The object was first spotted by a ground radar station, which guided the crew to it. Weather was clear with good visibility and a wind of about 20 knots. The crew believed the object stayed near the glow of their jet's afterburner. The radar could not lock onto it, and ground radar did not paint it during the event.
Air Force intelligence comments noted the crew's account differed from ground observers who reported what was believed to be the same sighting. One comment said the performance suggested the object was possibly a light carried by a high-performance aircraft, but no explanation was found for the ground radar's failure to track it. The record card marks the case as unknown.
