Summary

On September 20, 1962, two Air National Guard airmen flying near Eveleth, Minnesota, reported an object. The pilot and radar observer were in an aircraft at 35,000 feet. The time was about 0158Z. The object was in sight for about 1 minute 30 seconds.

They described a large star-like white object that flashed about twice a second, as bright as a planet. It moved much faster than a satellite. It first appeared at about 70 degrees elevation and 300 degrees azimuth and faded out before reaching the horizon at about 120 degrees azimuth, on a straight course. It looked like an aircraft at 70,000 feet moving at about Mach 3. Two other F-89J aircraft were doing practice intercepts at lower altitude and were not mistaken for the object. The sky was clear.

The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force said the duration showed the speed was too great for a satellite and evaluated the case as an aircraft sighting.
