Project Blue Book Case File
20 Mi N Of Tyndall AFB, Fla., January 1955January 1955
Summary
On January 5, 1955, at about 11:25 p.m. (2325Z reported), a military pilot in a T-33 about 20 to 22 miles north of Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, reported one object. The pilot was a maintenance test pilot. The sighting lasted about three to four seconds.
The object was described as round, the size of a baseball as seen, and greenish, with a bright light. It had a trail seven to eight times the size of the object. It appeared about 42 degrees above the horizon, dead ahead, then dove toward the west and faded at the horizon.
The same object was also reported by a ground observer at Tyndall Air Force Base, by a local civilian, and by an air evacuation flight. The ground observer described it as round, blue and red, and said it looked like a shooting star that left a streak. Weather was a moonlit night with excellent visibility.
The Air Force record, filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports, listed the conclusion as a probable meteor.
