Summary

On November 23, 1958, at about 3:15 a.m., observers near Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, reported a falling object. A civilian ground observer about 12 miles west of DeFuniak Springs was driving on a highway. A pilot in a T-33 aircraft also saw it.

The ground observer saw a white streak or trail made of discernible particles. It began as a blue point, then turned white as the trail broadened. The pilot saw a falling blue light with sparks trailing, like a large falling flare. The object moved away at extremely high speed and disappeared on the horizon. The entire trail was visible for about one-half second and disappeared instantly.

The weather was clear with stars visible. The ground observer was described as a reliable witness with about 10 years of experience watching armament tests. He said the sighting was unique in his experience and ruled out natural phenomena familiar to him. The Air Force could not determine if or where the object came to earth.
