Insufficient Data

Summary

On October 17, 1962, around 6:30 p.m. local time, a civilian man in Stamford, Connecticut, watched a bright shining object move across the sky. He was resting on his roof when he saw it travel from the northeast to the northwest. The object seemed to jump as it moved. He later wrote a letter describing the event. The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record system for unidentified flying object reports.

The object moved about 100 ground yards in two minutes, then turned and came back. At that point two more objects appeared, one from the northeast and one from the south. The three joined and formed a triangle for about half a minute. The first object then continued northwest. The other two split off, one going north and one going south, and faded within about 15 seconds. The Air Force found the maneuvers and speeds consistent with aircraft.

The same record card includes a separate sighting reported by two teenage boys (ages 14 and 12) at 4:37 p.m. They were watching two jets when a very luminous, cigar-shaped object appeared below the planes. It crossed from horizon to horizon in 23 seconds. The altitude was not determined. The Air Force listed this part as insufficient data.
