Summary

On August 26, 1956, a civilian in West Haven, Connecticut, reported a single object. The sighting was recorded at 0645Z and lasted about one hour and thirty-three minutes. It was still in sight when the first report was made.

The witness described one round, white object, said to be about the size of a quarter held at arm's length. The object appeared as a slowly rising white light in the north that would get much brighter at times.

The Air Force noted the witness's size estimate was clearly in error. The sighting had the marks of an astronomical body seen under an inversion or unusual atmospheric conditions, and it pointed toward the star Capella in the northeast. The evaluation was probably astronomical (Capella).
