Summary

On July 10, 1957, at dusk, a civilian Air Force lieutenant colonel in Hartford, Connecticut reported a sighting. The observation lasted about forty five minutes and was made with the naked eye and binoculars.

The witness saw one object that was a brilliant white light. It looked unevenly round and was about ten times larger than a star. It held a steady course from west to east directly overhead, at an elevation of about 50 degrees. Weather and visibility were excellent.

The report notes that the AF Research Center at Cambridge identified the object as a Moby Dick balloon, released in California. The Air Force record (Project 10073, its official file for unidentified flying object reports) lists the case as a probable balloon sighting.
