Summary

On August 12, 1962, in Danbury, Connecticut, a family observed a small bright object near the moon for seven minutes starting around 9:30 p.m. EDT. Using a 50-power eyepiece telescope, the witness noticed the object approximately 200 to 300 miles above the surface north of east somewhere near the areas of Cassioleius and Harilius craters. The object moved in a northerly direction toward the moon's surface and disappeared at approximately 9:37 p.m. EDT somewhere near Herodotus. Five observers saw the object during this time. Although the object was reported in front of the moon, an occultation of a star in Sagittarius occurred at this time, and this event was considered as a cause for the sighting. The Air Force evaluation was Unknown.
