Insufficient Data

Summary

On the evening of March 15, 1960, in Waterbury, Connecticut, a student saw a bright, circular object moving slowly across the sky at high altitude. The object was so striking that the student called family members outside to watch it. The sighting lasted several minutes before the object disappeared.

The next day at school, the student mentioned the sighting to a teacher. The teacher brought it up in class and discovered that other students had seen the same thing with their parents on the same evening. This cluster of observations prompted the student to contact the U.S. Air Force.

The Air Force sent a letter on April 7, 1960, asking the student and parents to complete a detailed questionnaire and return it to the Aerospace Technical Intelligence Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. The letter noted that the initial report "does not contain sufficient information for a valid conclusion." Records show that questionnaires were forwarded for completion, but no follow-up information was received. The case file states that "no conclusion can be drawn on this information received" and lists the case as insufficient data for evaluation.
