Summary

On the evening of July 17, 1956, a resident of Windham Center, Connecticut, reported seeing two bright objects in the sky that seemed to move together and eventually broke apart. The objects appeared as bright as a star and were roughly the size of a pea held at arm's length. Over about 15 minutes, the witness observed them moving and heard a deep throbbing sound. The observer noticed vapor trails behind the objects and initially thought they might be meteors until one of them appeared to explode.

The Air Force sent the witness a standard questionnaire form to gather detailed information about the sighting. The file notes that the sighting had not been "definitely identified" at the time of the Air Force's reply in August 1956. On the evaluation form, the case was marked "unknown," though a comment box suggests the Air Force considered the possibility it was a balloon.

The complete case file, consisting of 12 pages as held by the National Archives, is reproduced below.
