Summary

On October 27, 1962, at 7:44 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, a civilian observer at a planetarium in the Stamford, Connecticut, area reported a faint object in the sky. He was watching the Echo satellite when he saw it. The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record system for unidentified flying object reports.

The observer described an unusually faint and persisting object that looked like a slow meteor. It moved to the southeast from about 45 degrees elevation. He followed it with binoculars for about 3 seconds until it went behind a tree at about 20 degrees elevation. He saw no color and detected no change in brightness. The object appeared as a band about 0.1 degrees wide and 0.5 degrees long, brightest in the center and fading at the ends. The sky was very clear.

The Air Force noted the report came from an observer who should be familiar with meteors. The case was listed as possibly a faint meteor.
