Summary

On May 28, 1962, crews of several aircraft flying over the northwestern United States, especially Montana, reported an object at about 0358Z to 0546Z. The object was reported by airline flights and a C-135 crew.

The object was a bright white light. It was seen high on the horizon, moving from north to south at very high speed. Some crews reported it appeared to be burning, with burning pieces falling off, and some thought they saw navigation lights. One report described it as round and large. It left no clear trail or exhaust and made no sound. It disappeared quickly. Reports were relayed through an FAA controller in Miles City, Montana.

This report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. Officials noted a large plastic balloon was loose near Sheridan, Wyoming, but said reported speeds did not match known winds. The Air Force concluded the object had all the characteristics of a fireball class meteor, noting no satellite re-entry occurred on that date.
